From the way we design our research programs to how we manage our laboratory facilities, we are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint while maximizing our positive impact on human health. We believe that responsible science and ecological stewardship go hand in hand.

Our Four Pillars of Sustainability

1. Green Chemistry
BioNatura integrates green chemistry principles throughout our extraction and synthesis workflows. We prioritize the use of biodegradable solvents, catalytic processes, and atom-efficient reaction pathways to minimize waste generation and reduce the use of hazardous substances. Our BioExtract™ platform is a showcase of this commitment, using supercritical CO₂ extraction and aqueous-based isolation methods that deliver exceptional purity with minimal environmental impact.

2. Renewable Energy
Our Belgian research facilities are powered by 100% renewable electricity from certified wind and solar sources. We continuously invest in energy-efficient laboratory equipment, intelligent building management systems, and waste heat recovery technologies to reduce our overall energy consumption. By 2028, we aim to achieve carbon-neutral operations across all our laboratory sites.

3. Waste Reduction & Circular Practices
Laboratory waste is one of the most significant environmental challenges in the life sciences sector. BioNatura has implemented a comprehensive laboratory waste minimization program that includes solvent recycling, reagent reuse protocols, biodegradable packaging for product distribution, and partnerships with specialized waste management organizations for the responsible disposal of unavoidable hazardous materials.

4. Ethical & Sustainable Sourcing
The botanical materials at the heart of our pharmaceutical research are sourced through certified sustainable supply chains. We work exclusively with botanical suppliers who can demonstrate compliance with CITES conventions, fair trade principles, and organic cultivation standards. Our procurement policies explicitly prohibit the use of plant materials from endangered species or ecologically sensitive habitats, and we actively support botanical conservation programs in key biodiversity hotspots.

Sustainability Reporting

BioNatura publishes an annual Sustainability Report that provides transparent disclosure of our environmental performance metrics, including greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, waste generation rates, and progress toward our published sustainability targets. We are committed to aligning our reporting with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework and the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
